"Back to the roots"! John Mellencamp nimmt es bei seinem neuen Album mit dieser Aussage ganz ernst: Aufgenommen wurde es an legendären historischen Orten, u.a. den Sun Studios (Elvis Presley) und einem Hotel in San Antonio, in dem 1936 Blues-Legende Robert Johnson eine frühe Schallplatte aufnahm. Auch der Sound stimmt: Mellencamp benutzt nur historisches Equipment. Keine Chance für Digital!

Nachdem der amerikanische Songwriter mit Produzent T Bone Burnett schon 2008 beim Album "Life Death Love And Freedom" zusammengearbeitet hatte, setzt er die erfolgreiche Kooperation nun hiermit fort. Eingespielt wurde das Album letztes Jahr während einer Tournee mit Bob Dylan und Willie Nelson durch den Süden der USA. An freien Tagen nahm Mellencamp mit den Musikern seiner Band, u.a. Marc Ribot, Andy York, T Bone Burnett, Jay Bellerose, die Gelegenheit wahr, dreizehn neue Songs aufzunehmen. Die Einflüsse reichen von Blues und Folk über Western und Gospel bis zu Rockabilly und Country.

Das Album macht seinem Titel alle Ehre: besser könnte es kaum gelungen sein!
